August Twofer Challenge

One of my favorite monthly challenges, because it really IS a challenge, is called the "Twofer Card Challenge." It requires the use of the exact same stamp, stencil or die to make two cards with distinctly different designs for two different occasions. The August Challenge is named "Sun/Moon." I dug through my stamps and found a wonderful wood-mount from Stampscapes named “Cloud with Sun Lg” and got busy creatin’!

Twofer Card Challenge- #30 Sun/Moon

The first card, for Fathers Day, features the Sun stamp, plus to other Stampscapes wood mounts-a large scenic lakeside cove, and a mini fisherman stamp. In the late ‘90’s I co-owned a stamp store in South Dakota, and Stampscapes was one of our most popular lines of stamps.  The company's owner/artist/master stamper, Kevin Nakagawa, is an amazingly talented and generous person. He provided our fledgling business with dozens of free stamps to use in classes, plus provided excellent customer service. I don’t use wood mount stamps very often these days, so it was fun to pull these beauties out and put them to use. My ink pads weren’t as juicy as they should have been, and I was going to toss the stamped image of the lakeside cove, but then decided that I kinda liked that is had a misty quality. So… I decided to go with that concept and added decorative chalks with a make-up sponge (to the sky), Q-tips and my fingertips (to the trees, rocks and water.) A white gel pen provided glints of light on rocks and water, plus helped define the sunbeams. A few circles of layered yellow vellum added contrast to the sun. The final touch was to add a fisherman to the scene. What a wonderful way for a Father to celebrate the day named in his honor!

The second card, a fantasy-themed friendship card, features the Sun stamp, plus an adorable Unicorn digi and two digi sentiments. This time I used glossy cardstock as my base and stamped the sun with a newly inked dark blue ink pad, I had intended to create a sunset scene but decided to see if I could create a starry night sky instead. I used stamping sponges to layer on several shades of blues, purples, and pinks to get the depth of color that I wanted. And Voilà… the sun became a moon! I used a white gel pen to highlight the moonbeams, and sprinkle the sky with stars. When I added a circle of bright white cardstock to the epicenter of the moonbeams, magic happened!
I had a few Z-fold card bases on my craft table and used one of them for this card. (This card base is even easier to make than a gate-fold! I provided a tutorial link below.  Just do the first two steps. Easy Peasy!) Adhered the night sky behind the die-cut window frame and trimmed any excess from the top and edges, then attached to the card front. Added the colored digi and sentiments, plus a few paper scraps to decorate the inside to finish this card that is sure to brighten someone's day… or night!

  1. You created such lovely scenes with your twofer, Kathy ... each on magical in it's own way! The colouring on your Father's Day card is fantastic ... dreamy and misty ... and so atmospheric ... the glint of the sun on the lake is brilliant! Your little unicorn perched on the window sill is adorable ... and what a wonderful night sky behind her ... the sun and it's rays make a wonderful moon and moonshine! Thanks so much for playing along with us at Twofer! Anita :)

  8. I thought your nature scene was a purchased image that you had stamped the fisherman silhouette on, Kathy! WOW! Really amazing use of those precious stamps and I love how you embraced the misty quality and added to it. Plus, adding layers of yellow vellum to the sun just shows your excellent attention to detail! Your unicorn hello design couldn't be cuter or more fun with the z-fold and wonderful night sky. I love that sediment! Thank you so much for playing in Twofer Card Challenge #30! Keep well! Hugs, Darnell
