Recipe for YUM

This entry for Beccy's Place Sixth Annual Month of Holiday Cards Challenge inspired by the letter "R" is Recipe. My sweet hubby once told me that his favorite Christmas cookie is his moms Gingersnaps. She is 96 years old, lives in an Assisted Living home, but still does Christmas baking. Just yesterday when my hubby called her she was at his sisters' making Lefse [a Norwegian holiday treat made with… of all things… mashed potatoes. They are so yummy with butter plus cinnamon and sugar.] Um… I digress. Back to the gingersnaps. As a newlywed, I asked my MIL for her recipe and surprised my hubby about 40 years ago when I made a batch. [He said they were good, but not as good as his Mom's. And, he was right. Hers are just the perfect mixture of crunch on the outside and chewy goodness on the inside.] For this card, I made a photocopy of the recipe card she gave me, and used the mixing spoons image from Beccy's digi set "Tied Up With a String." I had planned to add a drawing of gingersnaps. But… well… as you can see from the photo, they don't look like cookies AT ALL. When I showed the drawing made with markers, colored pencils and a bit of chalk, he gave me a funny look and said, "They look like… well… um…poo!" And sadly they do. So I used alphabet stickers to spell out "YUM" in the place where the cookies would have been. The checkered background is actually cut from a napkin which is a perfect fit for this card. The inside sentiment is from a Power Poppy digi set named "Gingerbread Family."
[PS- am going to be making several more of these cards so that I can send one to each of Rich's sisters. I think they will love seeing their Mom's beautiful handwriting adorn the card. And they are sure to remember those cookies.]

Wanted to make another card for the Simon Says Wednesday Challenge, "All That Glitters is Gold" and opted to go with a simple yet elegant look. Sadly, I'm running low on Sympathy cards and remembered making one like this years ago. Started with an A2 sized card made with black cardstock. Pulled out a "With Sympathy" wood mounted rubber stamp from PSX with a beautiful flowing script and inked it up with gold pigment ink. Poured on a hefty dose of sparkly gold embossing powder, shook off the excess and applied heat. I next trimmed the right edge of the card with a Fiskars deckle edge scissors, tapped it against the gold pigment pad, dipped it into the gold EP, shook off the excess and heated it to get the nice golden edge. The inside of the card includes a liner made with white stationery paper, cut to 5x8 inches, folded in half and secured with gold cording, looped over the liner and tied at the bottom. I will use a simple sentiment on the inside, or no sentiment and just hand write a personal message. Am entering this into two other challenges- Outlawz [focuses on the greeting/sentiment] and Bugaboo BINGO [using the diagonal from upper left to lower right, sentiment/embossing/sparkle.]

For my final card this posting, I used a brushed metal sentiment that I found in the clearance section of a local store. This set was labeled "Locker Art" and came with these two words plus several brushed metal hearts. Instead of using the hearts, which were pretty large, I added a few stripes of color for the background and embellished the sentiment with a few small star stickers.  The card is made to fit into an A10 envelope, but I had to crop the ends to fit it into the photo. When finished, I think it makes a nice statement with a slightly patriotic feeling.

  5. You're so entertaining Kathy, I enjoy reading your posts. I'm sorry Rich didn't like your gingersnap drawing... I actually thought it was pretty good. I can see that they're meant to be cookies. It was a lovely idea to copy your MIL's hand-written recipe, what a wonderful memory for them all.
The sympathy card you made is elegant and beautiful. I like the addition of the gold cord around the spine, that's a nice touch.
I agree that your last card has a patriotic feel to it Kathy... the stars and stripes mixed with the red, white and blue. Love the brushed silver lettering and the sweet little stars. Great job!
    Cheers,
