Final Virtual Weekend Entries

This post features my last five entries into the Whimsy Stamps Virtual Weekend challenges. Usually this event is held at a retreat, but due to COVID they moved it to FB. I’m hoping they do that again in the future because it was fun to pick up so many wonderful freebies and watch some excellent tutorials.

My first card features a critter that appears to be really popular right now… a sloth. Of course, Whimsy’s version is cute and cuddly. Plus I love that it comes with a sentiment. I created a cloudy sky background with decorative chalks, a makeup sponge, and a stencil cut from scrap paper. After coloring and fussy-cutting the sloth, I adhered it to the chalked sky and added the sentiment on a banner. To add a bit more texture and color, I draped die-cut vines across two corners.  I’m entering this card into several challenges including Outlawz Festive Fridays (I’m getting really tired of working from home. Most days I feel pretty “sloth-y” and feel there is reason to celebrate just because I am out of bed… and wearing pants!) and Outlawz Saturday Challenge, Pets are People, too (I had to research whether sloths are considered pets, and learned that yes, they are classified as “exotic pets.” They are pretty spendy though and need lots of special care. So I guess they are like some people. Heh heh!)
Supplies:
·    Digi and Sentiment- Whimsy Digital stamp set (Sloth)
·    Colored with Spectrum Noir alcohol markers, Sakura Gelly Roll white gel pen
·    Cloud template cut from scrap paper, chalks and makeup sponge
·    Fancy Foliage Dies- Spellbinders Our Daily Bread Designs
·    Assorted background papers from my stash

My next card features a cute little penguin riding the wind on party balloons. I entered it into the Designer Inspiration Challenge, mainly because I learned how to use my alcohol markers to color penguins during this event from several of the designers!  The cloud background is made with stationary I’ve had in my stash for many years. After coloring and fussy-cutting the penguin, I trimmed off the balloons and replaced them with translucent ones made with scraps of plastic document sheets. (These wonderful items come in a pack of assorted colors and can be found in the office supply section of most stores. I really like using them on my cards because they're cheaper than colored vellum and are more translucent.  You can write on them with a fine-line permanent marker, which I used to trace the balloons on the digi. The plastic is easy to cut with a nice, sharp pair of scissors.) The sentiment is part of the Whimsy Sloth digi set.

With Father’s Day coming soon, I decided to use this wonderful Whimsy digi named "Sheltering Love" to make this card for the Whimsy Challenge TicTacToe game. My card follows the middle row (Embossing- gold snowflakes, blue papers, and Father’s Day theme.) The wonderful “Father” sentiment on the front of the card is from my dear mom’s treasure box. She collected small antique items like buttons, ribbon, lace and old greeting cards. When we used to stamp together, she loved coloring bears, bunnies and other furry critters, so I know that she would have loved seeing one of her antique card sentiments on this card. I wanted to enter the card into the Snippets Challenge, so I pulled out my blue and brown folders of paper scraps and cut strips of select ones to weave into a background. Some of the leftover strips and the section of the weave that had been trimmed from the front were used to decorate the inside of the card.

When I saw this Whimsy Virtual Weekend freebie with a farm theme, I dug through my file of old calendar pages and found the perfect one, a scene from Wisconsin’s dairyland! I colored and fussy cut the digi then attached it to the farm scene background atop a sheet of vellum. I used the barn from the digi on the inside of the card, along with a free Father’s Day digi. (I did replace the bees wings on the digi with vellum for a little fun.) I also added a little fun and texture to the card front with mini-flower sequins and tiny bees (which I’d cropped from the free sentiment, reduced in size, colored and fussy-cut. Tedious… but they do add a nice bzzzzy feeling to the card!) And the fact that I added several of them allows me to enter the card into the Day of the Month Challenge- “Repeat Day.”

My final card for the Virtual weekend is an entry into the sketch/color swatch challenge. I flipped the sketch on its side so that the cute Whimsey image named “Penguin Skier” could have some room to navigate! Three snowflakes decorate the corner, a center strip of the sketch is a snow scene upcycled from an old calendar and the sentiment if a freebie from Papercrafts magazine several years ago. I used several colors on the color palette, especially blue, fuchsia, and a bit of golden yellow.  I’m entering this card into several challenges including the NBUS (Never Before Used Schtuff!) since this is the first time I’ve used the snowflake die. However, it was pre-loved by a stamper friend who served with me on a Design Team until she recently had to move into a memory care unit. Her grandson and his wife set up a website named “The Crafters Estate” [subtitled- a crafters dream estate sale]  to liquidate her large collection of well over 1000 stamps and dies… at 70-90% off! I purchased several items last month and they are the sweetest couple. (They own a photography business in Nebraska so are friendly, gracious and also, apparently, very tech savy. If you visit the impressive site you’ll see this!)  I just checked back and there appear to be just a few hundred items remaining, so you might want to check out  The Crafters Estate soon to add some gems to your collection AND to help the family of a fellow stamper! If you visit, go down to the “all products” link and look for the red “SALE” logo to find the items that are still available. I’m betting there are several that will want to come and live at your house!)
