Five Cards and a Tutorial

My entry in Beccy's Place Fifth Annual Month of Holiday Cards Challenge for the letter "V is an "Vellum Ornament."  I used one of Beccy's beautiful  freebies named "Christmas Bauble 1." Printed the ornament on vellum and colored it from the back with Tombow markers. To make the holly stand out, I cut an insert from a scrap of white cardstock that I adhered behind the holly. (This was easy to do since Beccy had drawn in the lines for the insert in her design!) Highlighted the top and bottom of the ornament with a white gel pen, fussy cut it out and set it aside. Stamped the pine branches in dark green ink with a stamp from an SU set, "Ornamental Pine" on a 4 x 5¼  inch rectangle of white cardstock. Added a few touches of brown "bark" on the branches, and shaded a few of the pine needles with a dark green Tombow marker to add depth. Punched a hole in the top of the vellum ornament, looped  a 6-8 inch strand of silver thread through it and typed a loose knot on the end. Positioned the ornament on the front of the card and taped it down (put the tape on the white cardstock- not the vellum- and it won't show.) Then wrapped the silver  thread around to the backside of the rectangle and taped it down. Adhered this rectangle to black cardstock and trimmed it closely. Adhered this to an A2 card front. The sentiment, also printed on vellum, is a Lili of the Valley digi set named "Christmas Wishes."

The current Whimsie Doodles challenge is named "Santa's Helpers." I posted an earlier card I entered in this challenge that highlighted a cute Elf. This time, I decided to show a more realistic helper, namely a "mom" holding a carafe of coffee. I mean, who doesn't need a few cups of coffee when staying up late to wrap gifts, or possibly make some of those gifts? (I love this Whimsie Doodles image especially those cute bunny slippers!)

I used to co-own a rubber stamp store in South Dakota. Was blessed to have a business partner that had an accounting background (who took care of all the taxes, etc.) and I made most of our sample cards and taught classes. I was thinking about that recently and remembered the classes that were most popular involved making cards that didn't take a lot of time to make, didn't require expensive stamps, tools or accessories and had a "wow factor." My "Snowy Scene" card was a favorite! Decided to make one again and develop a tutorial to inspire others to try to make one of these really simple cards.
Below are three versions of the Snowy Scene card (the tutorial follows them.)
The original-stamped in purple ink with a layered sentiment and snowflakes , a CAS version- a one layer  card stamped in green ink, and a Santa Claus version- the most complicated with the addition of a masked moon in a sky sponged with several shades of blue ink, white gel pen "moonlight reflections" on trees,  and a silhouette of Santa and his reindeer.  If you look closely, you can even see Rudolphs red nose. So fun!
(PS I am entering this card into the AAA Challenge, "Celebrate" because the first few snowfalls of the year always seems like something to celebrate.  This is especially true when we get a beautiful snowfall on Christmas Eve. I'm like a little kid when we have "snow days" with no school/work. Love them!
And, am entering it into the Simon Says Monday challenge, because the mask used to make the snowdrifts are made with torn paper. )

Double D’s Challenge- Here Comes Santa Claus       (daranddiane.blogspot.com)
AAA Card Challenges- Celebrate                                  (aaacards.blogspot.com/)

Here is the tutorial:
Materials needed-
o   Scrap paper (postcard size- ¼ of an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of any lightweight paper will work)
o   Card stock (cut and folded into an a2 size card)
o   Ink pad (I used the purple and blue sections of a rainbow pad for this sample. Use color/s of your choice.)
o   Tree stamp (I used a small stamp from Embossing Arts, but any size should work.)
o   Other stamps- selected sentiment, assorted snowflakes.
o   Other items- Glitter and Zig 2-Way glue pen (or sparkly Stickles.), scrap cardstock, adhesive, vellum.

Preparations-
o   Cover table/countertop with scrap paper as you will be stamping off of the edges of the card.
o   Lay folded cardstock out on stamping surface (Note- the card can be stamped horizontally or vertically. My sample card was created to be horizontal, i.e. folded along the top of the card.)

Stamping directions-
Step 1) Create snowdrift mask by tearing top 1/3 of a postcard-sized piece of scrap paper off at a slight angle. (To simplify directions, I’ll refer to the larger scrap as Mask A, and the smaller piece as Mask B.)

Step 2) Lay mask A across the top of the card. Ink the tree stamp and tap it across the top of the card. To get layering effect, stamp image several times at varying heights before re-inking. (The lower edges of the image should be on the mask, not the card front.) Remove mask A.

Step 3) Flip mask B over, and lay it across the center of the card. Repeat stamping tree image as in step 1, making sure to leave an open space for sentiment to be stamped/layered. Remove mask B.

Step 4) Stamp layer of tree images across the bottom of the card.

Step 5) Stamp sentiment on cardstock scrap and layer as desired. (I used several layers of colored and glittery cardstock plus vellum with metallic flecks.) Set aside.

Step 6) Stamp snowflakes, repeating the image several times before re-inking to create depth. Add glitter with sparkly stickles. Or draw squiggles with glue pen across the tree images and snowflakes and sprinkle with glitter. (Here is a close up of the glittery snow!)

Step 7) Attach sentiment.

Winter Wonders

My entry in Beccy's Place Fifth Annual Month of Holiday Cards Challenge for the letter "U" is an "Upcycled Snowman."  Since I love adding upcycled items to my cards, I was thrilled to find this dearie dolls digi image with a cardboard snowman. The Lili of the Valley sentiment was printed on vellum.

For this card I printed off and colored Di's Digi image "Love To The Moon And Back."  I then fussy cut the image and mounted it onto Christmas Star scrapbook paper. Developed and printed off sentiments for the front and inside of the card. (Love this precious image… and it is now on sale for $2.00 at www.disdigistamps.com) Am entering the card into a few challenges, including Di's Digi challenge (although there are no wings or feathers, all of these cute critters have tails!)

Mid-week Posts

My entry in Beccy's Place Fifth Annual Month of Holiday Cards Challenge for the letter "T" features one of Beccy's free images that I am calling "Trio of Bells." I printed the digi onto vellum and colored it with Tombow markers and white gel pen.  Paired with a silver embossed stamped sentiment the card is oh so pretty!
(Oh my! I was just alerted by Beccy that this isn't her image. So... I did a bit of research and discovered that it is actually a free digi from TLC Creations- createwithtlc.blogspot.com- which is one of my other favorite sites for beautiful digis!)

Several years ago I developed a few designs for a friend who owned a small stamp business. This Viking was one of the designs. I live in the Midwest, where there are LOTS of Minnesota Vikings fans, plus married into a Norwegian family, so the cards I make from this stamp are pretty popular. For this card, I added an extra layer to hold the three section sentiment and added torn paper to provide a bit of texture.

I've owned this PSX stamp for many years, and love the bold image that it provides. For this card I made a box fold base that is a variation of a design that I found here stampladee.com/collapsible-box-card-with-deb-valder. On the back of the card is a story about the Real Santa Clause that I clipped from a Salvation Army newsletter years ago.

Santa Bear

I am excited that the Fifth Annual Month of Holiday Cards Challenge at Beccy's Place is on day 21… and I am almost caught up with my entries. Has been such fun to create Christmas cards to fit into the letters of the alphabet, many with digis that Beccy created herself and offers for sale, or provides free, on her site. She also includes tutorials for many, many types of cards and card folds (140 separate tutorials at my count!)   If you haven't visited her site I'd suggest it. And, while you are there, you can join in the fun of this challenge!
This is my entry for the letter "S"- "Santa Bear." I used two of the characters from Beccy's "Bear with Me" digi set (one on the front of the card and one on the inside) and gave both of them hats to turn them into Santa Bears. Used a free digi hat from www.clipartmasters.com on the inside bear, and revised it a bit for the bear on the front. Printed the sentiments off on my computer for the front and inside of the card. (PS The checked napkin that I used for the cover background was a bit overwhelming, so I added a few ovals of vellum to tone it down. They provided the perfect base for Santa Bear.)

This wonderful sentiment strip is another one of Beccy's digis, this one is one of her freebie. (You can find it here http://beccysplace.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/margies-christmas-freebie.html). I printed the image on vellum, colored it from the back and added white gel pen highlights. Added a bit of bling and then grounded the whole creation with black corner mounts. Am entering it into a few challenges including the Simon Says Monday Challenge (torn edged paper), and the Callin' All Sista's Color Challenge.

For this card, I "extended" the use of a vintage All Night Media stamp (from 1981), by stamping off of the edge of the card so that he looks like he is escaping the scene vs. holding a balloon. I found the inside sentiment on the internet years ago. Recently spent time researching its source. Didn't find the original author, but it appears that it is actually from the 90's. (http://cyberslayer.co.uk/jokes/diary-of-a-cat-day-751) And the sweet little cat print stamp is from Stampendous.

Boots, a Cat and Leaves

My entry into Fifth Annual Month of Holiday Cards Challenge at Beccy's Place for the letter "R" is "Rustic." I made this gatefold card in honor of my father-in-law Gene Escher, who passed away last fall just a few days before his 99th birthday. He was an amazing man, who raised Arabian horses for many years before becoming a successful stockbroker. I loved going to rodeos with him, as he would explain all the intricacies of techniques as we watched roping, cutting and barrel racing. He lived in cowboy boots most of his life, and wore them up to his final days on this earth! Will send this to my MIL this Christmas, as I think it will bless her heart. PS The cowboy boot stamp is from Commotion. The stamp for the inside greeting has no name on it.

Penny Black stamps makes some awfully cute kittens! Here is proof of that fact. I made second impressions of her cute little paws and mounted them with a bit of foam tape so that they pop out of the bird bath. Not sure that the birds wanted to share their birdbath… but doesn't look like the kitty is planning to leave anytime soon! Am entering this in several challenges that focus on furry friends and things with wings.

Used my favorite leaf stamp from Stampendous to create this card. To make the background I used a brayer brush and a rainbow ink pad to lay down a bit of color before stamping the leaf repeatedly in various shades of autumn colors. I gave the center leaf center stage by sponging a square of white cardstock with the autumn colors. After the inks were dry (I used a heat gun to hasten that) I stamped the leaf with clear embossing powder, then brayered the image with black ink. (You can find tutorials on this technique by searching "Jacobs Coat Stamping Technique" on youtube or Pinterest.) I usually do one final step that I've not seen in the tutorials. To give an added orange peel like texture, I generously sponge embossing ink over the finished image, cover with embossing powder, remove excess powder, and swipe over it with my heat gun. Because I am entering this card into the Simon Says Monday Challenge entitled "Tear it up" I tore the edges of the background and the centerpiece. I especially like the way the torn edge on the centerpiece brings the original white cardstock out, creating a natural frame for the leaf. Am also entering it into QKRs "Give Thanks" Challenge, and CAS-ual Fridays Gratitude and Attitude Challenge (because I love that the Thanksgiving holiday reminds us to share our thanks and gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy!

Christmas plus Critters

A simple yet beautiful card for a CAS challenge. I turned these wood mount stamp into unmounted ones several years ago so am not sure of the company that makes them. Am entering it into the AAA Cards challenge, "Celebrate", because the sentiment provides us with reason to celebrate! We celebrate Christmas because it is Jesus' birthday! Also, am entering it into CAS-ual Friday's Challenge, "Gratitude & Attitude." My life holds joy and meaning because I am loved by my God.  For this, I am truly grateful!

Wanted to make a special card to send to a friend that has two little kiddos who are at the perfect age for all things Santa. Cut the window panes out of cardstock, created a mask from a sheet of transparency, and sponged brown ink around the window shape and panes. I didn't have a stamp that would work, so I created my own! Was fun to make drawings for both the front & back images of the big sister sharing the magic of Santa with her little brother. (I colored their hair to match my friends' kids… figure they'll get a kick out of that. And added a red rhinestone to Rudolph's nose. So fun!) The Santa Sleigh image is unmounted (so don't know who makes it) but the inside greeting in from SU… and the trees in the scene are from Stampscapes.

The current House Mouse challenge is entitled "Frosty." For my card, I used a jaunty little felt snowman, added some black beads to make his eyes and buttons sparkle a bit, and invited sweet little HM Monica to bounce on his top hat. She happily obliged! (BTW- The festive background paper is upcycled from a McD's coffee cup. It was a little overpowering, so I added a bit of vellum so that the happy dancing could begin!)  The sentiment is from Beccy's Place digi set "Narcissus."
