myasperations 6-23-25

This month’s sketch at Build Your Stash Holiday Cardmakers group (BYSHC) Challenge on FB is a simple one that has inspired me to make many cards. I love the sweet little gingerbread boy from Beccy’s Place, so you’ll see him show up several times this month! (My nickname for this pudgy little cutie is “Pillsbury” because he is such a cute little doughball!)  I printed Pillsbury onto Kraft cardstock which is the color of gingerbread, and also it simplifies the coloring process (which mainly included shading with a few tan and brown makers, adding his nose and tummy button with red markers, added green to the irises of his eyes, then finishing with a white gel pen to fill in the whites of his eyes, and to add highlights to the image (check the photo for their placement!)
I wanted the coloring of the gifts and candy canes to be bright and clear, so I printed an extra copy of just that part of the image on white cardstock, colored it, fussy-cut it, and then adhered it in place atop the original image. I also printed an extra copy of the pudgy guy's hands from Kraft cardstock and attached them with foam tape to provide some depth to the image. (You can see this in one of the pics.) So cute!
An added note- Sadly, Beccy Muir, artist/owner of Beccy’s Place, is discontinuing her digi line on June 30th (she explains the reasons for this difficult decision HERE.) So, if you have plans to add any of her digi sets to your collection, or have any gift cards you need to use, you will need to do that within the next few weeks! Beccy added a “Digital Stamp Sale” section to her shop, in which she has posted many individual digis and sets from the past, priced from $3.50 to as low as 31¢ (US rate.) The good news is that Beccy will continue to offer all the wonderful free digi images and tutorials on her blog. Plus, clear stamps, cutting dies, patterned paper, and cut sheets will be available from several vendors in Australia, and also via the web. Check HERE for details.

Simon Says Wednesday Challenge- Going Around in Circles

Since I retired, I’ve started making packets of cards that I deliver to several places for holidays: my dentist's and optometrist's offices, a nursing home, and the residential drug treatment facility where I worked for 13 years until my retirement. (The clients there earn “points” for attending educational sessions, completing required steps toward recovery, etc., and they love being able to “purchase” handmade cards to send to loved ones during the 30+ days they are in treatment.)
I’ve had this fishing-themed stamp in my collection since I co-owned a stamp store in South Dakota back in 1998-2001. (Sadly, I don’t know the company's name because I pulled the rubber from the wood years ago.)  I created the fishing scene by taping a 2x3-inch scrap of cloud stationery to a 1x2-inch scrap of blue cardstock. I inked the stamp with black ink, then carefully positioned it above the fishing scene so that the boat could “float" on the water and the fishing lines could reach "into" the water. (It took some time to get the correct placement, but my MISTY helped!) A few ink pads in various shades of blue and a ripple stamp added depth to the ripples, and a white colored pencil added highlights. I used a template to cut the scene into a rectangle, creating a lovely scene of fishermen floating along on a beautiful day with their lines dropped into the depths of the cool blue water. I adhered the scene to a scrap of black paper, trimming it to create a frame for the scene.  The rest of the card then came together pretty quickly with computer-generated sentiments, scraps from an old map, rustic-looking washi tape, and realistic fish stickers.
Supplies:

·   Wood Stamp-Fishing (unknown company)

·   Water ripple stamp from Stampscapes

·   Upcycled state map for background

·   Digi- QKR Eureka Digital Stamp (Fishing Fly) Currently Not Available

·   Colored with Spectrum Noir Classique markers, a white colored pencil, Sakura Gelly Roll white & silver gel pens

·   Sentiments- “Behold the fisherman…” Computer Generated (Source Unknown)

Note- I’ve had this in my file of sentiments for many years, but it wasn’t sourced. A few years ago I did some web research and found a few versions; the earliest was a vintage postcard on eBay with a 1946 postmark. It’s no longer available, but I did save pics. You can see that it contains no copyright or name of source. (And when just re-reading them, I realized the original sentiment I’d saved in my files didn’t have the line “smelling of strong drink.” Considering that I provided some of my cards to clients in a drug/alcohol treatment center, I’m thankful for that!)

·   Fish Stickers- Hobby Lobby

·   Washi Tape- Tim Holtz

·   Templates, cloud stationery, cardstock, ink pads, and other items from my stash.
