myasperations 6-28-26

I created this card for the Time Out Photo Challenge, which features a sunbather and summer sky. My card also features a sunbather, albeit an unusual one, enjoying a sunny a  summer sky, and a humorous sentiment.  I created a background from an upcycled calendar page bedecked with a sun made from scraps of yellow vellum and glittery gold cardstock. I printed off and fussy-cut the little porker, then positioned him on the beach, cut a slit in the beach, slid the portion of his feet and beach chair in place, and adhered it in place. The sentiments, plus a few embellishments finished the card!
Supplies:
·   Background scene is upcycled from an old calendar

·   Digi and front sentiment from a Bugaboo Digi set named “Bacon in the Sun” (Company no longer in business)

·   Colored with Spectrum Noir Classique markers and Sakura Gelly Roll white gel pen

·   Inside Sentiment- “Eat. Sleep. Beach. Repeat” from Imagine That! Digis (Sadly, the company is no longer in business.)

·   Inside sentiment embellished by a small upcycled photo from the back of a calendar, and a starfish upcycled from an old card.

·   Sun created with yellow vellum and gold sparkly paper.

·   Sookwang double-sided tape- Available from several sources on the web.

·   All other misc. items and tools from my stash.

This card features a digi from Sweet November Stamps named “Song of the Sea.” The background scene is a freebie from one of my favorite sites for free digis, sentiments, and more! It also features a “marbled” frame that I made just last week!  A friend had hosted a “Marbling Party” and invited a small group of crafters to bring any items we’d like to “marble”. I decided to bring white and light grey cardstock to create  underwater backgrounds for mermaids, sea turtles, and snorkelers! It was fun to see all the neat patterns that arose as we splashed around on a hot and muggy day, getting “creative and messy”! The process was actually pretty fast and easy. However, we learned from our hostess and the woman teaching that class that the prep was just the opposite, and required experimenting with a few odd ingredients for the process to actually work. (I asked for a link to details and provided them in my supplies list below.)
I provided a picture of the A2-sized piece of cardstock that I marbled. I knew I wanted to use this beautiful marbling to frame the beach digi, but also didn’t want to “waste” the center of the marbled piece, so I trimmed that for later use. I adhered the blue marbled frame to an A2-sized card front and set it aside.
After printing off the beach background and the sweet mermaid, I colored and fussy-cut the mermaid and adhered her atop the background. I added a bit of extra color to the beachy sand in the background digi and tore the edges of the background to fit within the frame.  Two colors of Stickles added sparkle to the mermaid’s scales and tail, and to the water spray. Lastly, a strip of very soft, very light blue colored “netting” was draped across the bottom and one corner of the card and taped in place. (I found this delicate, ultrafine netting at a 75% off sale last fall at Hobby Lobby and love how it adds soft texture to the card!)

My final creation for this post is actually a set of paper-bag ornaments that I made with my sweet mom back in the 80s! She'd cut the patterns from an old magazine, and we had fun making a pile of them to give to her grandkids (she had 5 at that time, but by the time she went to live in her heavenly mansion in 2012, she was proudly spoiling 13 grandkids and 11 great grandkids!)
We raided Mom’s quilt scrap basket for colorful snippets of fabric, fiberfill, and buttons. I provided the embroidery thread, thin wire, and a permanent black marker.
I found this photo while organizing/decluttering my craft room, and it brought back a wonderful rush of memories. I’m glad that I took this photo as a reminder of the day we spent together. You can easily tell which of them I made (ummm… the two at the bottom of the photo) because the blanket stitching is pretty scratchy and uneven!
During my childhood, my Mom was my crafting buddy, and as an adult, she became my coloring/cardmaking buddy. I miss her so much.

Supplies:
·   Paper bags, thin wire, fabric scraps, buttons and fineline permanent black marker.

·   Patterns- Sadly, I didn’t keep a copy but I’m thinking I’ll sketch out a copy and share this craft with my grand-nieces next Christmas. They would love them!! (And their mom or dad might still have one of the “originals”!)
