A Trio of Sweetness!

The first posting is for last weeks challenge at the wecraftcards forum called “Candyland.” Our card/creation was to include shapes or images from the well-known game. I googled it… and found a photo of the 1962 version I played when growing up, and immediately was drawn to the gingerbread man on the box. So I knew I’d make a Christmas card! I printed a copy of the little couple from the Power Poppy Gingerbread Family digital set onto Kraft brown paper, colored and fussy cut the cute little pair. I wanted to make them into ornaments that could be hung on hung on a tree or in a window, so I printed both the front and back of each of the little cuties, adhered them together with my snail tape, slipping a loop of dental floss between the top of their heads before securing it with adhesive. To add a playful touch, I cut a circle from the card front so the little gingers could playfully peek through, attaching them with detachable tape so they can be easily removed without damage. So fun!  (Oh... and this sweet 10-piece digi set-which also includes the sentiment on the inside of my card-  is now available at half price, just $2.49, so you might want to give it a look!) I’m entering this card into several challenges including The Paper Shelter- Embellishments (I think that removable ornaments count as embellishments?) Also, I wanted to note that the beautiful plaid background paper was in a 6x6 stack of Christmas papers that I won from a Crafty Hazelnut’s Christmas Challenge a while ago. I love the wonderful assortment of papers that it holds! (Thanks, Hazel!)

I wanted to make one more card for the current challenge at Double D’s, so I decided to make a card on which I could feature several shades of lavender and purple. A tri-fold shutter card seemed like the perfect fit. I pulled out instructions that I’d found on Pinterest a few years ago. (There are lots of options. HERE is my favorite.) The adorable image is from Whimsie Doodles. Some of the first digis I ever owned were from them… so I was so sad to see the business close a little over 2 years ago. (I first learned how to use alcohol markers to color hair using the very easy to follow instructions on their site. I just checked and it is still available HERE. If you struggle with shading and highlights, it is worth a look!)

A Perfect Time to Craft 2020-Anything Goes- Challenge #5-2020

Outlawz has a fun new challenge right not called “Teddy Bears Picnic.” I’ve always loved that catchy tune so just had to play along. When looking through my Whimsie Doodles digis I found this sweet image named “Jayson the Pooh” and decided to make a shape card on which to feature him! Hand sketched the honey jar onto an A2 sized card, cut it out and attached the digi that I’d colored with alcohol markers. Finished the card with little bees (from a Little Scraps of Heaven digi set, I replace their wings with vellum for fun), an inside sentiment (from an Imagine That! digi set), and a scrap of twine. (Oh, and the sweet Beelieve digi set is available at 75% off, just $1.00, so you might want to check it out!)
I’m entering this card into several challenges including Simon Says Wednesday Animal Fun” (I don’t want to be the one to tell Jayson that he isn’t a real bear!) and Path Of Positivity Challenge- Furry or Feathery Friends. My card reflects the importance of furry friends, the stuffed version, like the bears, bunnies, and other soft friends that many of us loved as a child. This sweet digi makes me think of one of my nephews, Jesse, who had a beloved Pooh-like bear. (He was actually a knock-off brand, so looked sort of Poohish in appearance and Jesse named him Walter.) The two were inseparable. I know that “Aunt Kathy” provided delicate surgery several times when split a seam and stuffing popped out of his belly. By the time Jesse set him aside for softballs and frisbees the much-loved Walter was, in the words of the Velveteen Rabbit, “Real.” Jesse’s older brother Casey had a bunny that was his best friend. One evening, when Casey was just short of 4 years old, I received a call from my sister, Carol. She explained that he had accidentally left “Bun” at our home on a visit the day before and he wanted to talk to me about the situation. With tears in his voice, Casey came on the line and said, “Aunt Kathy, I’m scared [small sob] for Bun. He will miss me so bad. Can you bring him to my house?” Casey couldn’t contain his tears any longer and I heard my sister consoling him as she took the phone. We arranged that I’d ship Bun out by overnight mail… so that the two didn’t have to suffer many more nights of separation. These two nephews are now all grown up. Both are amazing men… strong, yet with kind and tender hearts. I’d like to think that the unconditional love of their furry friends had something to do with that. (Oh, and their mom and dad are also wonderful parents and encouragers. Carol is also a crafter, and is busily sewing a whole menagerie of furry friends for their grandbabies!)

  7. All your cards are sweet. I especially like the story behind the last one. I remember when we were on a family trip and my sister left her Kewpie Cuddles behind at a motel. Dad refused to drive back, and my sister was inconsolable for weeks. When we were adults, my other sister and I went on Amazon and bid successfully on a Kewpie Cuddles and surprised her with it on her birthday. It only took 30 years but we got her Kewpie to her. Your Pooh bear card is cute; thanks for sharing with us at the Path of Positivity challenge blog!
